Aug 2022: 2022 Best Workplaces – a peak behind this year’s list


Wellbeing, flexibility and inclusion were the watchwords for the 2022 list of Australia’s Best Workplaces™.
Being named as one of Australia’s Best Workplaces cements an organisation’s reputation as among the best employers because the awards are based on the voice of employees. Great Place to Work® has surveyed more than 100 million employees over the past three decades, building a detailed picture of what it means to be an employer of choice.

Taking care of employees’ well-being, partly driven by the lessons from COVID, was a theme running through this year’s awards.

Many organisations are making a concerted effort to take care of the health of their people.

And it’s not only physical health – we saw a rise in activities aimed at caring for the mental health of employees, including the continued rise of mental-health first aid training and a normalisation of mental health conversations.

We also saw flexibility continue to gain as an important employment issue.

The key here is listening to and learning from employees and adjusting flexibility policies in response.

We also heard of companies redesigning their physical workspaces to optimise flexible working, creating room for collaboration and making the workplace an attractive place to be.

And diversity, equity and inclusion continued to be critical features of the best workplaces. Most companies have DEI policies and programs in place and the best ensure those programs extend beyond gender equity.

Congratulations again to the 2022’s winners:

  • Micro: The Recruitment Company – The 22-person-strong recruiter where every staff member said it was a great place to work compared to 56 per cent of employees at a typical Australian company.
  • Small: Howden Insurance Brokers (Australia) — Just 18-months old, the business has grown from two people to more than 50. Some 95 per cent of employees agreed with the statement ‘I can be myself here’.
  • Medium: Mantel Group — the technology consulting business runs eight divisions using a principles-based approach, with 99 per cent of the team reporting that management is honest and ethical in its business practices.
  • Large: Cisco — the global technology giant’s fifth consecutive year on a Best Workplaces list! Built on purpose, 97 per cent of Cisco’s employees say they feel good about the ways the company contributes to the community.
